چکیده

Degradation of underwater images is different from normal images. In underwater imaging light interact with water in two ways, scattering and absorption. The scattering and absorption together is called attenuation of light in water. This attenuation is wavelength dependent. Because of scattering and absorption, underwater images are affected by back scattering, forward scattering and absorption of light in water. As a result of which the images are degraded, and also dominated by green or blue color. Water is not only source of degradation, but underwater images are also affected by suspended particles and dissolved compounds in water. The degradation also depends upon depth of water, day time, geographical location, source of light and physical properties of water etc. Many underwater applications need clear underwater images. Clear underwater images can be achieved by image enhancement and restoration techniques. The image enhancement techniques are simpler and faster than restoration processes because it does not require any prior knowledge about the parameters of water, where image has been captured. Underwater image enhancement techniques includes contrast enhancement, non uniform illumination correction, and color correction techniques. Among these very few researchers attempted a problem of non uniform illumination correction. Some image enhancement and color correction techniques for underwater images are reviewed in this paper. The quality metrics used to test the image quality are also discussed in the paper.

An Efficient Underwater Image Enhancement Using Color Constancy Deskewing Algorithm

The objective of image enhancement is to recover the perception of information in underwater images for human viewers, or to provide recovered input for other automated image processing techniques. In underwater conditions, the image clarities are corrupted by light inclusion and diffusion. This causes one colour to dominate the image. In order to enhance the observation of underwater images, w...

Image Enhancement and Restoration Methods for Underwater Images

In this chapter, the authors provide an overview of state-of-the-art image enhancement and restoration techniques for underwater images. Underwater imaging is one of the challenging tasks in the field of image processing and computer vision. Usually, underwater images suffer from non-uniform lighting, low contrast, diminished color, and blurring due to attenuation and scattering of light in the...

Underwater image quality enhancement through composition of dual-intensity images and Rayleigh-stretching

The quality of underwater image is poor due to the properties of water and its impurities. The properties of water cause attenuation of light travels through the water medium, resulting in low contrast, blur, inhomogeneous lighting, and color diminishing of the underwater images. This paper proposes a method of enhancing the quality of underwater image. The proposed method consists of two stage...

Image Quality Enhancement Using Pixel Wise Gamma Correction

This paper presents a new automatic image enhancement method by modifying the gamma value of its individual pixels. Most of existing gamma correction methods apply a uniform gamma value across the image. Considering the fact that gamma variation for a single image is actually nonlinear, the proposed method locally estimates the gamma values in an image using support vector machine. First, a dat...

Diving into Haze-Lines: Color Restoration of Underwater Images

Underwater images suffer from color distortion and low contrast, because light is attenuated as it propagates through water. The attenuation varies with wavelength and depends both on the properties of the water body in which the image was taken and the 3D structure of the scene, making it difficult to restore the colors. Existing single underwater image enhancement techniques either ignore the...
